We are very happy to share the good news: we have a Munich Research Centre for Jewish-Arabic Cultures!

On October 31, 2022, the Munich Research Centre for Jewish-Arabic Cultures (jac@culture.lmu.de) celebrated its opening with great lectures and wine: Prof. Dr. Irene Goetz (Dekanin of the Faculty of Study of Culture, LMU) and Prof. Dr. Ronny Vollandt (Professor for Judaic Studies, LMU) introduced the mission of the centre, and the particular importance of its affiliation to Munich; Prof. Dr. Miriam Frenkel (Professor for Jewish History, Hebrew University, Jerusalem, and President of the Ben Zvi Institute for the Study of Jewish Communities in the East) and Prof. Dr. Marina Rustow (Khedouri A. Zilkha Professor for Jewish Civilisation in the Near East and Professor of History, Princeton University) talked about the centrality of Judeo-Arabic Studies for our understanding of Jewish History, Islamic History, Medieval and World History, Language Studies, Arab-Jewish Relations, and much more. The keynote by Marina Rustow “The Yiddish of the Islamic World? Arabic in Hebrew Letters and Why it Matters for Medieval History” was a tour-de-force of the field of Judeo-Arabic Studies. Thank you, Marina, for this fantastic talk!

The Munich Research Centre for Jewish-Arabic Cultures brings together a variety of projects relating to Jewish-Arabic cultures, and promotes exchange and collaboration between researchers in Munich and abroad. The current projects were presented at the opening with a poster exhibition: each project introduced its research and team, and all team members were present and happy to answer the questions of our audience and guests. The conversation around the many exciting ideas relating to the Munich Research Centre for Jewish-Arabic Cultures were further discussed over great food and wine—thank you all for coming and sharing this opening with us! We look forward to seeing you at our next lectures and events!
