SUMMARY:Workshop on Arabic Epigraphy
DESCRIPTION:To register\, please contact Dr. Teresa Bernheimer at t.bernheimer@lmu.de. \nAims: Scholars working on the pre-modern Near East are keenly aware of the limitations of literary sources\, which predominantly reflect Muslim\, elite\, male\, and urban perspectives. Inscriptions and documents offer contemporaneous evidence for the multi-confessional societies of the Near East during the transformative centuries of early Muslim rule\, including the experiences and interactions of Jews\, Christians\, Muslims\, and other communities. \nThe skills required to read\, interpret\, and integrate epigraphic and documentary evidence into historical research remain largely absent from university curricula. The Cambridge–LMU Strategic Partnership grant Epigraphic and Documentary Sources from Early Islamic Egypt: Tools and Skills for Graduate Students and Researchers addresses this gap through three training workshops on epigraphic and documentary sources from the Arabic-speaking world for graduate students and early-career researchers. \nThe first workshop\, on Arabic documents\, was held in Munich in November 2025 and taught by Prof. Geoffrey Khan. The second took place at the Genizah Research Unit in Cambridge and was led by Prof. Ben Outhwaite and colleagues. This third workshop will introduce participants to the latest research on Arabic epigraphy\, from the pre-Islamic to the early Islamic period. It is taught by Prof. Ahmad al-Jallad (Ohio State University)\, Dr. Ilkka Lindstedt (University of Helsinki)\, and Dr. Teresa Bernheimer (LMU Munich). \nLocation: Cluster of Excellence Cross-Cultural Philology\, LMU Munich \nThe workshop is supported by the Cambridge–LMU Strategic Partnership grant Epigraphic and Documentary Sources from Early Islamic Egypt: Tools and Skills for Graduate Students and Researchers\, directed by Prof. Geoffrey Khan and Prof. Ben Outhwaite at the University of Cambridge\, and Dr. Teresa Bernheimer and Prof. Ronny Vollandt at LMU\, Munich.

SUMMARY:Volkswagen Momentum Masterclass "The Persian Bible: An Introduction" with Dr. Ali Langroudi
DESCRIPTION:The masterclass “The Persian Bible: An Introduction” with Dr. Ali Langroudi explores the Persian Bible across Jewish\, Christian\, and Muslim traditions\, with particular attention to the interactions between different religious and linguistic communities. This Masterclass is part of the Volkswagen Momentum Fellowship Programme “From Pre-Modern to Modern Perspectives in Judaic Studies” at the Munich Research Centre for Jewish-Arabic Cultures. \nThe two-day masterclass is divided into four sessions. The first session will introduce the Persian language\, discuss Persian-speaking Jewish and Christian communities\, explore the concept of the “Bible” among Persian-speaking Jews and Christians\, and provide an overview of existing scholarship. The second session will focus on Jewish versions of the Persian Bible\, including the textual features of Judeo-Persian biblical books. The third session will examine the Persian Bible in the Christian tradition\, with particular attention to its textual characteristics. The final session will explore the influence of Arabic versions on the Persian Bible and discuss Muslim use of the Persian Bible. \nDr. Ali Langroudi is a Volkswagen Momentum Fellow at the Munich Research Centre for Jewish–Arabic Cultures. His research focuses on Judaism and Christianity in the Persian-speaking world\, particularly Persian translations of the Bible and religious and literary interactions among Jews\, Christians\, Manichaeans\, and Muslims. His current historical-philological project examines an eighteenth-century bilingual manuscript of the Pentateuch\, preserved at the Bibliothèque nationale de France in Paris. The manuscript contains a Hebrew text written in Arabic script alongside an interlinear Persian translation and is part of a larger initiative to translate Jewish and Christian scriptures commissioned by Nādir Shāh (d. 1747)\, the king of Iran. \nImage: The first folio of the Persian version of the Gospel of Matthew\, written in Istanbul\, today Or. 675 in the Special Collection at the Library of Leiden University.
