SUMMARY:Lunch-Time Lecture with Prof. Dr. Craig Perry (Emory University): "Slavery and Jewish-Muslim Entanglement in Medieval Egypt\, 11th-13th c."
DESCRIPTION:The Jewish community of Cairo preserved what is arguably one of the richest archives for the study of slavery in the medieval Middle East. This talk will explore these writings to illustrate different aspects of Jewish-Muslim entanglements in Egypt and beyond. The main themes will include: the interplay of Jewish and Islamic slavery law; slave-owning and the construction of Jewish masculinities; and the lives of unfree and freed peoples in this entangled society. \nCraig Perry is an assistant professor at Emory University in Atlanta\, Georgia in the Department of Middle Eastern and South Asian Studies\, the Tam Institute for Jewish Studies\, and the Islamic Civilizations Studies Graduate Program. He is co-editor of The Cambridge World History of Slavery: Volume 2\, AD 500 – AD 1420 (2021). In Fall 2025\, his book Slavery in a Medieval Islamic Society: a Jewish History\, will be published by Princeton University Press. \n \n

SUMMARY:Vortrag von Dr. Diana Matut (Alte Synagoge - Haus der jüdischen Kultur in Essen): "Her:Voice. Die vernakularen Liedkulturen jüdischer Frauen"
DESCRIPTION:Säkulare jüdische Frauen und Anhängerinnen der Reformbewegungen haben die Freiheit\, sich in jeder Form von Musik auszudrücken. Diese Freiheit ist jedoch ein relativ neues Phänomen. Historisch sowie im gegenwärtigen orthodoxen bzw. haredischen Kontext kann Singen ein höchst transgressiver und provokativer Akt sein\, der von vielen Faktoren abhängt. \nDieser Vortrag möchte die Her:Story singender jüdischer Frauen herausarbeiten\, wobei besonders der vernakulare Gesang im Vordergrund steht. Er wird der Frage nachgehen\, wie unterschiedliche halachische Interpretationen und diverse sozio-historische Kontexte sehr unterschiedliche Umgebungen für die musikalischen Praktiken und Möglichkeiten jüdischer Frauen schufen\, die bis ins 21. Jahrhundert hinein resonieren. \nDer Vortrag möchte jüdische Frauen als Innovatorinnen darstellen\, als diejenigen\, die in liminalen Momenten der Lebenszyklen musikalische Schlüsselfunktionen innehatten und -haben\, aber auch als Menschen\, die durch wechselnde halachische Interpretationen und männliche professionelle Konkurrenz historisch in der Ausübung ihrer Kunst stark herausgefordert wurden. Nicht zuletzt stellt dieser Vortrag Gesangspraktiken vor\, die orthodoxe und haredische Jüdinnen heute erneut für sich reklamieren. \nDiana Matut ist Research Fellow in der Abteilung für Judaistik der Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität München (LMU). Sie ist Leiterin der Alten Synagoge – Haus der jüdischen Kultur in Essen und unterrichtet regelmäßig jüdische Musik (und Altjiddisch) am Oxford Centre for Hebrew and Jewish Studies\, für das Aleph Cantorial Program und die Other Music Academy – Yiddish Summer Weimar.\nSie ist Judaistin\, Jiddistin (mit fortgeschrittenen Kenntnissen zu semitischen Sprachen) und Musikerin. SUMMARY:Masterclass "Mizrahi Music: The Postvernacular Age!?" with Dr. Diana Matut (Alte Synagoge - Haus der jüdischen Kultur in Essen)
DESCRIPTION:From the margins to mainstream – this is how Mizrahi music has often been described. What reads as a story of revivalist success is\, under close scrutiny\, rather a story of complete social\, linguistic and musical shift into an age of musical post-vernacularity. Mizrakhi music thrives in post-modern\, post-revival\, post-vernacular amalgams\, producing aesthetically pleasing\, incredible performances and recordings\, but musical vernacularity has been lost for the most part. \nThis course will engage with various questions regarding the past and present of Arab-Jewish musical cultures as well as cultural concepts of transfer and interference. It will analyse the social history of Mizrahi musics\, women’s performance practices as bearers of traditions as well as innovators and analyse chosen pieces. \nThere is no need to read music\, know Arabic\, Turkish\, Ladino or Hebrew when attending this course\, but please inform me if you do know any of these languages in advance. If you play an instrument that you’d like to bring to class\, please tell me well in advance as well.
