SUMMARY:Saadya Gaon in the Qaraite literature of the 10th–11th centuries
DESCRIPTION:Saadya Gaon’s anti-Qaraite polemic was fundamental for the development of Qaraite literature. In their turn\, Qaraites quoted Saadya and discussed his views so much that their treatises can now be used to reconstruct Saadya’s lost works. This workshop explores anew the inextricable connection between Saadya and the Qaraites by looking at a wide range of previously little studied Qaraite sources from the 10th-11th centuries. \n  \nPROGRAMME \n9:00 am – 10:00 am \nSacha Stern (University College London)\, Rabbi Isaac Nappaḥa\, founder of the Jewish calendar: how a Rabbanite text came to be owned by Qaraites \n  \n10:00 am – 10:30 am \nCoffee break \n  \n10:30 am – 11:30 am \nMaxim Roozen (Freie Universität Berlin)\, References to Saadya Gaon in Yaʿqūb al-Qirqisānī’s Kitāb al-Anwār wa-l-Marāqib \n  \n11:30 am – 12:30 pm \nNadia Vidro (University College London)\, A Qaraite refutation of Kitāb al-Tamyīz by Saadya Gaon and its attribution to Ḥasan Ben Mashiaḥ \n  \n12:30 pm – 2:00 pm \nLunch \n  \n2:00 pm – 3:00 pm \nFriederike Schmidt and Ronny Vollandt (Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität Munich)\, References to Saadya Gaon in the works of Sahl ben Maṣliaḥ \n  \n3:00 pm – 3:30 pm \nCoffee break \n  \n3:30 pm – 4:30 pm \nGregor Schwarb (Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität Munich)\, Poznański’s Karaite Literary Opponents of Saadiah Gaon 115 years on: the cases of Yeshuʿah ben Yehudah\, Šlomo ben David ha-Naśi\, and Yefet al-Burqumānī

SUMMARY:Genres and Disciplines of Learning in Judaeo-Arabic Literature
DESCRIPTION:Convened by Sarah Stroumsa and Ronny Vollandt\, on behalf of the Society for Judaeo- Arabic Studies\nOrganized by Friederike S. Schmidt and Gregor Schwarb. \nThe emergence of Judaeo-Arabic literature was related to new ways of organizing and transmitting knowledge. The introduction of new disciplines went hand in hand with the development of new teaching methods and textual practices\, as well as the adoption of new literary genres and novel concepts of authorship. These changes had begun in the 9th century but developed mainly over the course of the 10th and the 11th centuries. They had a lasting effect on Jewish literature ever since. Disciplines of learning emerged that had no precedent in rabbinic literature\, such as lexicography\, grammar\, literary theory\, scriptural exegesis\, jurisprudence\, theology\, and philosophy. They reflected contemporaneous developments in non-Jewish literatures and brought along a host of new technical terms and concepts in Arabic. \nWe understand genres and disciplines of learning as dynamic structures that are never fixed and static\, but continuously interact with the reading public\, the social environment\, the literary canon\, and with other texts. \nThe Society of Judaeo-Arabic Studies\, therefore\, invites to the 21st conference of the Society for Judaeo-Arabic Studies Genres and disciplines of learning in Judaeo-Arabic literature (Munich\, 31st of July – 3rd of August 2023)\, a conference on the nature\, development and formation of genres and disciplines of knowledge in Judaeo-Arabic literature. \nThe conference will take place at the Ludwig-Maximilians-University Munich.\n \n  \nPROGRAMME\n  \nMonday\, 31st of July\n10:00 am – 12:00 am \nWalking tour (“Jewish Munich”) \n  \n12:00 am – 1:00 pm \nGet-together at the Institute of Near and Middle Eastern Studies (Veterinärstr. 1) plus light lunch \n  \n2:00 pm \nVenue: Center for Advanced Studies (Seestraße 13) \n  \nWelcome \n  \nTranscending Communal Boundaries (I) \n2:15 pm – 3:45 pm \n  \nPanel I \nChair: Sarah Stroumsa (Hebrew University of Jerusalem) \nDaniel J. SUMMARY:Writing Christian History in the Abbasid Empire: The Chronicle of Dionysius of Tell-Mahre (d. 845) in its Byzantine and Arab Context
DESCRIPTION:A lecture from Marianna Mazzola (LMU München) in the 4MZ-Reihe “Kulturen des Islam: Aktuelle Forschung”\nThe Chronicle of Dionysius of Tell-Mahre\, a history in Syriac covering the years 582 to 842 AD\, reflects the adaptation of the Syriac Miaphysite Church to the Islamic rule\, allowing to probe into the often-neglected perspective of religious minorities in the Islamic empire.\nHis representation of the past as well as of contemporary events reveals socially and culturally conditioned ideas of Syriac ecclesiastical elites in the Abbasid age: he puts much emphasis on the relations with the Islamic authorities and on conflicts resolution and patriarchal control within the church in a period in which a generally nonchalant attitude of Islamic authorities contributed to the outbreaks of numerous schisms. Dionysius also situates himself in a very competitive historiographical field\, embedding Byzantine and Syriac sources into his work and adapting them to convey his own vision of Christian history in the new context of a non-Christian political setting. \nProgram of the 4MZ-Reihe “Kulturen des Islam: Aktuelle Forschung”

SUMMARY:Masterclass on Geonic Responsa in Munich with Dr. Zvi Stampfer (Hebrew University Jerusalem)
DESCRIPTION:The Responsa literature (Heb. she’elot u-teshuvot\, „questions and answers“) has been an important Jewish literary genre since the eighth century. As the name indicates\, Responsa are queries sent by individuals and communities to a Jewish authority\, and the responses the latter sent back. The Islamic conquest brought most of the world’s Jews under the aegis of one political regime\, thereby enabling rabbinic Jews to establish and maintain a central authority in the form of two Jewish academies (Heb. yeshivot) in Baghdad. The head of each rabbinic academy in Baghdad was called Gaon (pl. geonim). Hence\, Geonic Responsa stand for the correspondence of individuals and communities with the central yeshivot in Baghdad during the 8th-11th centuries. \nOver the course of the Middle Ages\, many thousands of questions and answers in the lands of Islam were compiled into collections and in this form constituted a source for study. The topics discussed cover all aspects of Jewish life\, including law\, theology\, language\, biblical and Talmudic interpretation. Hence\, the Responsa literature represents an extraordinary resource for knowledge about the history and culture of Jews in the Medieval Islamic countries. \n  \nIn this workshop\, we will examine various aspects of the Geonic Responsa\, including their physical features\, their cultural contexts\, and their contribution to the study of medieval Jewish scholarship and of Jewish history. During each session\, different sources will be used. Participants will work with reference material and samples of both published and unpublished responsa. \n  \nOn Wednesday\, 10 May 2023\, the workshop will take place at Edmund-Rumpler-Straße 9\, Room A 119\, and on Thursday\, 11 May 2023\, it will take place at Edmund-Rumpler-Straße 13\, Room B 109. \n  \nWednesday\, 10 May 2023 \n10:00-12:30 First Session \nThe Characteristics of Geonic Responsa \n  \n12:30-14:00 Break \n  \n14:00-15:30 Second Session \nResponsa as a Source for Medieval History \n  \nThursday\, 11 May 2023 \n  \n10:00-12:30 Third Session \nDossier Reconstruction: The Circulation of Geonic Responsa in the Middle Ages \n  \n12:30-14:00 Break \n  \n14:00-15:30 Fourth Session \nResponsa on Theology and Biblical Interpretation

SUMMARY:Verändert Religion unsere Art zu sprechen?

SUMMARY:Workshop on Jewish Amulets and Jewish History with Prof. Dr. Gideon Bohak (Tel Aviv University)
DESCRIPTION:The aim of this workshop is to offer a broad survey of the history of Jewish amulets and a hands-on experience of studying specific amulets from different periods. \nThe course will be arranged chronologically\, from late antiquity to the twentieth century. In each session\, we shall offer a brief introduction to the types of Jewish amulets known from this period\, and then focus on one or two specific amulets. We shall examine every aspect of these amulets\, including their physical features (writing materials\, layout\, mode of production\, etc.)\, the texts they contain (languages involved\, the use Jewish or non-Jewish sources\, the history of textual traditions\, etc.)\, their social contexts (the identities of the producers and of their clients\, the social location of amulet-production\, etc.)\, and their potential contribution to the study of Jewish magic and of Jewish history as a whole. In each session\, we shall make use of high quality digital images\, as well as transcriptions and translations of specific amulets. Before each session\, the students will read the amulets in question\, and some background reading materials.
