SUMMARY:Volkswagen Momentum Workshop "Rethinking Jewish Cultures Beyond Europe"
DESCRIPTION:This workshop is organized within the framework of the Volkswagen Momentum Fellowship Programme “From Pre-Modern to Modern Perspectives in Judaic Studies\,” which seeks to bridge the traditionally segmented fields of pre-modern and modern Jewish history in the Near East through an integrated\, interdisciplinary approach. By encouraging the study of Jewish histories across temporal boundaries\, the programme highlights the mutual entanglement of pre-modern developments and modern contexts. \nIn this spirit\, the workshop brings together scholars working across different media\, geographies\, and methodological approaches to explore how Jewish pasts beyond Europe are narrated\, mediated\, and transformed into cultural heritage. Particular attention is given to challenging Eurocentric and Ashkenazi-centered paradigms in Judaic Studies by foregrounding Jewish cultural production in Arabic-speaking and other non-European contexts. \nMoving from textual and historical analysis to sound archives\, visual practices\, and participatory methods\, the program examines how meanings of the past are negotiated in relation to present-day political\, social\, and cultural contexts. Cultural production\, historical narratives\, and heritage practices emerge here as key sites in which competing understandings of the past are articulated and contested. \nThe workshop is structured in three parts. The opening day introduces different modes of narrating the past across media and disciplines\, framing key questions about authority\, representation\, and cultural translation. The following two-day masterclass led by Rudy Kisler focuses on the politics and semiotics of cultural heritage\, combining theoretical reflection with participatory methods such as photovoice. The final day turns to contemporary artistic practices in the exhibition “Yalla: Arab-Jewish Encounters” at the Jewish Museum Munich\, where participants reflect on how these questions are negotiated in curatorial and visual form. \n  \nProgram\nJune 9\, 2026\n9:30 Registration\n9:45 – 10:00 Introduction with Ronny Vollandt (LMU) and Marina Shcherbakova (LMU) \n10:00 – 12:30 Narrating the Past Across Media \nClaire Leibovich (Durham University)\nJacqueline Kahanoff’s Haggadah: Political Imagination and the Retelling of Biblical Stories in the Twentieth-Century Levant \nAlexandra Birch (Columbia University)\n“Let this be our Renaissance!”: Reconsidering Holocaust Evacuation to Soviet Central Asia in Jewish Intellectual History \nChristopher Silver (McGill University)\nSongs of the Land: Recording Trials and Tribulations in Arabophone Israel \n12:30 – 13:30 Lunch \n13:30 – 15:00 Discussion “From Narrative to Heritage: Scales\, Media\, and Authority”. SUMMARY:Vortrag von Dr. Diana Matut (Alte Synagoge - Haus der jüdischen Kultur in Essen): "Her:Voice.
\n  \nDatum: Mittwoch\, 9. April 2025\nZeit: 18:00 c. t.\nOrt: Hauptgebäude\, Geschwister-Scholl-Platz 1\, 80539 München\nRaum: A015

SUMMARY:Public Lecture and Masterclass with Maya Shatzmiller: "The Use and Abuse of the Genizah Documents"
DESCRIPTION:Public Lecture: “The Use and Abuse of the Genizah Documents: The Genizah and Medieval Economic History: Judeo-Islamic Symbiosis or Misconceptions? Four Cases” \nSixty years have passed since S. D. Goitein first drew attention to the Genizah documents as a unique source for writing the economic history of the Middle East\, among other.  Since then\, the work of researchers further documented how important are these medieval quantitative data. Recently\, however\, the content and the interpretation of the Jewish traders’ letters from the Geniza\, became a subject of debate and controversy\, suggesting that a review of the use of the Geniza documents may be in order. \nIn the first lecture I examine four cases where I used quantitative data from the Genizah in the reconstruction ofthe economic structures of the medieval Middle East and raise questions about their indiscriminate use. \nIn the second lecture (masterclass) I will examine the empirical evidence of the model\, based on the Genizah documents\, that economic interaction in the Islamic Middle East was grounded in informal institutions. I suggest that the assimilation of this model with inefficient cultural beliefs and collectivist behaviour attributed to Islamic societies raises concerns of empirical and methodological nature.\n \nThe lecture takes place on Wednesday\, 6 November\, 6:00-8:00 pm at Amalienstraße 73A\, room 112. \nMasterclass: “The Use and Abuse of the Genizah Documents: The Genizah\, the Maghribi Traders’ Debate\, and Collectivist Muslims: How the Genizah Documents Enabled Global Underdevelopment Theory” \nThe masterclass takes place on Thursday\, 7 November\, 2:00-4:00 pm at Edmund-Rumpler Straße 13\, room B 112.

SUMMARY:Friedrich Grote: Ein gescheiterter Bibeljäger und sein Vermächtnis
DESCRIPTION:Ein Vortrag von Peter Tarras (LMU München) in der 4MZ-Reihe “Kulturen des Islam: Aktuelle Forschung” \n  \nIm 19.

SUMMARY:Writing Christian History in the Abbasid Empire: The Chronicle of Dionysius of Tell-Mahre (d. 845) in its Byzantine and Arab Context
DESCRIPTION:A lecture from Marianna Mazzola (LMU München) in the 4MZ-Reihe “Kulturen des Islam: Aktuelle Forschung”\nThe Chronicle of Dionysius of Tell-Mahre\, a history in Syriac covering the years 582 to 842 AD\, reflects the adaptation of the Syriac Miaphysite Church to the Islamic rule\, allowing to probe into the often-neglected perspective of religious minorities in the Islamic empire.\nHis representation of the past as well as of contemporary events reveals socially and culturally conditioned ideas of Syriac ecclesiastical elites in the Abbasid age: he puts much emphasis on the relations with the Islamic authorities and on conflicts resolution and patriarchal control within the church in a period in which a generally nonchalant attitude of Islamic authorities contributed to the outbreaks of numerous schisms. Dionysius also situates himself in a very competitive historiographical field\, embedding Byzantine and Syriac sources into his work and adapting them to convey his own vision of Christian history in the new context of a non-Christian political setting. \nProgram of the 4MZ-Reihe “Kulturen des Islam: Aktuelle Forschung”
